More than 50 people gathered in Gala last night [Tuesday 21 May] to find out more about Scotland’s Yes campaign.

Guests heard Tasmina Ahmed Sheikh, a member of the Yes Advisory Board, stress how it is local people who will win independence for Scotland.

“We are at a unique point in the history of our country. It is up to us – you, me, every local group, every person you speak to – to make sure that our future is a better place than our past,” she said.

“We want to have control over our own destiny so that we can create a fairer, more prosperous society that responds to the needs of the people who live in it – for ourselves, yes, but even more so for our children and our children’s children.”

Stan Blackley, Deputy Director for Communities at Yes in Glasgow, explained the practicalities of how a yes group could operate. He set out the various kinds of structures that operate and stressed that support is always available from he and his colleagues.

“We have around 170 local groups in place now, and we are delighted to welcome Galashiels into our community. You won’t be on your own but you are free to work out your own plans about how best to work.

“There are more than 143,000 signatories to the Yes declaration and they come from right across the political spectrum. Many don’t belong to any party at all.

“Our many communities such as Labour for Independence, Business for Independence, Disabled, Christian, EcoScots, Pensioners for example are talking to people who share their particular interests about a decision that is so important for all of us.”

Calum Kerr, who organised the event at The Old Gala House said the evening had been a great success: “It was fantastic to see so many people ready to play an active part in shaping the best future for Scotland.

“Lots of questions stimulated our discussion. We’ll now set up about organising an overarching structure for Yes in the Scottish Borders, with local town-based groups sharing information and events.

“You’ll be hearing more from us soon!”

An Amber (be prepared) warning from the Met Office for heavy rain has been put in place for the north west of the region from 2pm until 8pm. Between 20mm and 30mm of rain is forecast to fall in just one hour, leading to the risk of localised flash flooding. The area could also see half of the usual monthly rainfall falling in just 2-3 hours. There is also a Yellow (be aware) warning for the whole of the region until 11pm.

Surface water on roads will make driving conditions difficult in places. Hail could also fall in some areas, possibly leaving roads slippery for a time and slowing the drainage of the surface water.

In line with Met Office guidance for Amber warnings, people should be prepared for some disruption to normal daily routines, including the possibility of flooding to homes, businesses and transport links.

Officers from Scottish Borders Council (SBC) and Police Scotland held a teleconference with the Met Office this morning and will also meet this afternoon to receive an update on the situation.

Rob Dickson, SBC’s Director of Environment and Infrastructure said: “The public should be prepared for the risk of localised flash flooding, particularly where these thunderstorms occur in urbanised areas. Motorists could also face problems due to the intensity of the rain and the risk of surface water on the roads. We would encourage them to think carefully about whether they need to travel when the weather is at its worst from mid afternoon, into the evening.

“We have already put plans in place to help the area cope and our services are ready for these Amber and Yellow weather warning periods. Staff will be checking grills on river culverts across the region to make sure there are no blockages, which would lead to a greater flood risk. We are also contacting areas with Resilient Communities plans in place to activate these where appropriate to help minimise the risk of the storms and heavy rain.”
